Release Profiles

Tune optimization without changing source behavior.

Core idea

Cargo profiles configure optimization, debug information, panic strategy, and more.

Start with the idea

Cargo profiles configure optimization, debug information, panic strategy, and more. Measure the real workload before trading compile time, binary size, or debuggability for speed.

A Cargo profile controls how a target is compiled. The default development profile favors fast builds and useful diagnostics; the release profile typically enables stronger optimization. Settings such as opt-level, lto, debug information, and panic behavior change compile time, runtime speed, binary size, or the quality of stack traces. There is no one best combination for every workload.

The sample enables optimization and thin link-time optimization while retaining some debug information. That is a reasonable candidate to measure, not a universal prescription.
